After scraping the original architectural plan designed by renewed architect Zaha Hadid for the 2020 Japanese Olympic Stadium due to spiralling estimated costs and far reaching online ridicule that it resembled a bicycle helmet, Japan have now announced their revised 2020 stadium plan today.
Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma it is a generally scaled down plan that vastly reduced cost. The original design would have cost a reported 252 billion yen (£1.4b) which would have made it the most expensive stadium ever built.
However, the new stadium will still cost 153 billion yen (£850m) to design, build and maintain.
The design is much more traditional, with a flat roof, shrubbery around its outer courses, and being constructed of largely wood and steel.
